Day Hiker Series - Exploring the Dames Caves and Lizzie Heart Sink Loop Trail
The Dames Caves and Lizzie Heart Sink Loop Trail is the best trail I have found in the Tampa bay area so far. While only a 4 mile loop there is the ability to extend that past 6 miles and even further. With actual inclines and declines, and tracks that require you to pay attention, it is not your casual walk in the wood on a relatively flat track. For this part of Florida you wont find much better (I will be looking).
First, how to get there. The trail is in the Brooksville Area of Florida. Absolutely beautiful area and nice drive. Once you get to US 98 head west and turn north on Citrus Way. Follow this about 4 miles (Road turns into S Lecanto Hwy). Look for the dirt park area on the east side of the road. (See image above).
Walk in - The Dames Caves are about 1/2 mile in and very easy to find and explore. There is one cave that is off by itself , but the rest are in a small group right on the path. On a side note, locals report that there are 30 caves suspected in the area, not all have been located and marked.
Downside of the Caves. Sadly many of the caves have graffiti and trash. So please if you see trash bag it and take it out. Don't leave your mark, so that other can enjoy it.
The Loop. After the main group of caves, you head east on the trail for another 1/4 mile and then head in and up. The Loop is very well marked, and the path is well worn in most parts. Along the back side the trail gets narrow and very uneven. Once you leave the wooded area, you will be on a logging trail that is used by 4 wheeler, so be aware. Look for the gated area west of the road and once past there you are back on the entrance trail again.
Things to Remember. This is Florida, even in early Feb, it can get hot and you can dehydrate , BE SMART, bring water. There in no water in this area. Also, wildlife: there is hog signs, but most were old. Lots of animal trails but other than some light tree rubs, not much other than squirrels and birds. DOGS: yes, dog friendly. I would not recommend small dogs unless they are very used to walking hills. Most Florida Dogs are not.
Below are so pictures for you to enjoy.
